The Sweaters That Make Jeans Look Like an Outfit

A curated flat lay of men's fall knitwear, featuring a dark grey quarter-zip sweater, a cream knit cardigan, and a rust-orange crewneck sweater against a neutral background.

The easiest way to make jeans feel dressed is to give them a sweater with an opinion. A deep V with a white tee peeking through. A brown crewneck against inky denim. A ribbed cardigan that makes you want to leave your coat open, even when that is a terrible idea.

The trouble is that a lot of sweaters disappear. They are fine, they are navy, they go with things. These are the ones I would buy when “goes with jeans” is too low a bar. Each brings something you can see across a room: a better color combination, a more interesting neckline, or enough texture to make the plainest denim feel considered.

Brown is where I would start if your jeans-and-sweater rotation has become a long conversation between navy and grey. Jack Archer’s Mocha Heather breaks it up without asking you to become a statement-sweater person. Against dark indigo, the color looks rich; add a brown boot and you have an outfit worth leaving the house in.

I prefer this to another charcoal crewneck because the opening gives the outfit somewhere to go. It draws the eye up, leaves room for a fine chain if you wear one, and looks especially good when the jeans have a looser leg. Keep the tee plain and the shoes sharp—a dark loafer would be my choice.

Amazon Essentials Cable-Knit Crewneck: bring some texture to black denim

Rust and black denim are a combination I would like to see more often. The orange-brown has enough depth to feel right in cold weather, and black jeans keep it from drifting into an aggressively autumnal outfit. Add black boots and let the sweater have the floor.

Buck Mason Seafarer Traveler Cotton Crew: a washed knit for worn-in denim

Some cream sweaters look as though they should be kept away from coffee. Buck Mason’s Traveler in Natural Venice Wash belongs with the jeans you wear on a Saturday. The washed color and slubby surface take the preciousness out of a pale knit, which is exactly what makes this one appealing.

Nordstrom Cotton & Cashmere Quarter Zip: make a simple pair of jeans look sharper

The collar is the reason to pick this over a crewneck. It frames the face and gives the sweater enough presence to stand on its own at dinner. Green Rosin Marl is the choice I would make if your wardrobe already contains plenty of cream and you want a little more color without a loud pattern.

Buck Mason Seafarer Cotton Rib Cardigan: the layer that earns its space

Wear it open and it takes the place of an overshirt. Button it over a tee and the front becomes more graphic, with the buttons breaking up that expanse of cream. I like it with a straight or wider jean and a substantial shoe. A tiny sneaker would leave all the visual weight upstairs.
